There has been a lot of discussion in our household over recent months about ‘becoming a man’ or more specifically, ‘becoming an adult’. The reason for this is my stepson’s 18th birthday.
And what do you get an 18 year old for a present these days?
A watch springs to mind – but how many teenagers wear a watch these days!

The birthday boy at the far end of the Teppanyai table. That's the last time we go there!
I’ve been struggling to remember my own 18th and frankly can’t recall it at all. I guess I just had dinner with the family, perhaps we even went out?
With that in mind, we went to a nice Teppanyaki restaurant last night. Although we booked in advance, when we got there, they sat our party of seven in a line down one side with only three of our group near enough the griddle to see any action.
After some discussion with management, we decided customer service wasn’t their forte, so we legged it over the road where we had a fabulous meal at a multi award-winning restaurant that was just perfect.
Anyway, back to the present’? we settled on driving lessons. Not exactly the type of gift we had in mind originally, but at least he can take it with him that is hard to lose.
That is one boy sorted, but what do we give the others when their time comes!
