The Inaugural Run 4 The Brain
Last year I went to a friend’s wedding; a celebration of life, of happiness, of love and devotion. Within months, my friend’s new husband was diagnosed with a tumour on the brain and given months to live. He underwent surgery and is of course, still having chemotherapy. Earlier this year, his wife decided to do something to say thank you to those who do such good work and she decided to organise a fun-run to raise money for brain cancer research. Raising funds for brain cancer research She had never staged anything like this before, yet...

I’ve just spent the last two days helping to officiate at a very unusual inter-school sports carnival. This wasn’t your typical inter-school athletics carnival, where the object is to find out which children are the fastest, strongest, most skilled etc. This was an immersive educational experience for children in Class 5 who are studying ancient Greece. Over the term, the kids have been learning about life and culture in ancient Greece and the subject culminates in a two day inter-school Olympic Games. Immersion Learning Children from...

When I set up this blog in January 2007, it was a bit of an experiment. I didn’t really know what I would write about. Sure, I had a few ideas, but my main goal was just to start. Now, here we are, 3 years 10 months down the track and I think it’s time for a major site makeover. I’m not just thinking of a paint job, but rather a full ‘back to basics’ reconstruction for a fresh start in 2011. Over the next few months a lot of the articles will be taken down and an all-new structure will begin take shape. What I...

I was inspired to go to our local coffee shop by and article I just read in the new York Times by Benedict Carey titled, ‘Forget What You Know About Good Study Habits‘ (Sept 6th 2010) I guess this is chaos theory in practice’¦ I’m sure Mr Carey, whilst writing this article, never imagined that his words would inspire someone 10,008 miles away to go to the Gumnut Café in Hall. Nonetheless, here I am. The article points out that psychologists from the University of California and the University of Virginia tell us that...

One of the things I love about my work as a personal coach is that it constantly keeps me on my toes. The last few weeks, I’ve found myself helping a couple of my clients improve their productivity and reduce their stress levels. And to do this we’ve been working on improving organisation in their daily lives and we have spent some time dealing with procrastination. Last Friday morning, I sat at my desk and looked at my own ‘to do’ list. Being organised is not one of my natural personality traits; it’s something I...

One of the things that I guess all brides fear is a wedding day catastrophe, such as; the groom not turning up, the wedding car breaking down, losing the ring, a family squabble etc. Last weekend we went to a wedding where everything went fairly smoothly until just before dinner. There was a blackout at the reception venue. Without warning, the reception venue lost all power. Now I don’t know anything about running a wedding function centre, but I can think of quite a few people who would be in a flap if they had a crowd of guests...
